      <image:title>Life's Compass - Using a Planner Effectively with ADHD - Break tasks into smaller steps: Divide larger goals into manageable, bite-sized tasks to prevent them from feeling insurmountable, helping to maintain focus and progress. Prioritize goals: Select a few high-priority goals at a time to avoid spreading attention thin. Focusing on a limited number of objectives enhances the chances of successful completion. Consider time and resources: Evaluate the time and resources available before setting a goal. ADHD individuals often struggle with time management, so accounting for these factors improves goal attainability. Embrace flexibility: Recognize that unexpected challenges may arise due to ADHD-related fluctuations in focus and energy. Build flexibility into your goals to accommodate these variations without discouragement. Set specific, measurable targets: Define your goals with clarity, outlining measurable outcomes. This provides a tangible way to track progress and celebrate achievements, boosting motivation along the way.</image:title>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - The Quest for Success - Marlon Wayans (Actor): “Success is not a destination but the road that you're on. Being successful means that you're working hard and walking your walk every day. You can only live your dream by working hard towards it. That's living your dream." Winston Churchill (Prime Minister of the UK): “Success, in his opinion, is all about rising to your feet after losing. According to him, success is the ability to bounce back from setbacks without losing enthusiasm. Churchill believes that neither success nor defeat is definitive. So, his only concern dares to go on.” Bill Gates (Business magnate, philanthropist, and investor): “The secret to success is having clear goals, working hard to accomplish them, and continually improving. Whom do I admire and why? Are any of the items on your list already completed? If not, what are you doing to achieve these objectives? What is important to me? <image:title>Life's Compass - The Quest for Success - According to research, success in attaining one's goals, such as completing a specified assignment or achieving a certain degree of income or status. Many other academics, too, have discovered some common patterns in how people define success, such as financial wealth, career advancement, personal satisfaction, and meaningful relationships.</image:title>
      <image:caption>For some, success may be defined as a stable job, career progress, a peaceful life, monetary success, self-development, or influence on the world. Others may define success as gaining fame or power. Similarly, success may be defined as good health, happiness, and emotional well-being. As a result, we all have a unique perspective. However, it is essential to highlight that it is not a one-size-fits-all idea and that true success is ultimately judged by one's sense of contentment and happiness. Let's look at some example definitions of success.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ecbc621c6fa01358cf454d5/7775bec1-18bb-4ece-9bd6-0a5eb4198314/Picture3.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Life's Compass - The Quest for Success - Unfortunately, many of us have never bothered to ask ourselves this seemingly simple question. Instead, we buy in to the traditional definition of success: wealth, fame, and power. We buy the clothes, houses, cars, and things that we see make others happy. We make the goals of others our goals due to the fact that we are not in tune with what makes us feel successful. We rely on the definition given to us by society. However, if you look carefully beneath the surface, many prominent figures, celebrities, and influencers who “are successful” appear profoundly unhappy. Is the influence of society truly the essence of success?</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ecbc621c6fa01358cf454d5/904c7cb6-71bd-464d-a110-51b474b4828b/Picture4.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Life's Compass - The Quest for Success - In addition to understanding your own definition of success, you must also learn to believe in yourself. Knowing that you are strong enough to accomplish what you set out to do and be is just as important as knowing what you are aiming for. Also, be sure that you don’t compare your idea of success with that of others. Comparing does nothing but set you up for failure as your goals are not the same. In this mindset, instead of following your definition of success you chase other people's goals. By doing this, you become stuck in a never-ending loop of insecurity where you're never quite good enough and live in a feeling of defeat. Moreover, you may lose sight of your core values as other people's successes are built around their own values and not necessarily yours.</image:title>

You may stay motivated and focused while making the improvements you want to see by setting precise, attainable objectives. Think of it like this, if time management has historically been challenging for you, one of your goals might be prioritizing your chores and establishing reasonable completion dates or times.</image:title>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Your Guide to a Better Future - Your present and future are profoundly impacted by your past. Its positive and negative aspects mold you into the person you are today. However, it's essential to recognize that your perspective on past events shapes how you approach life in conscious as well as unconscious ways.</image:title>
      <image:caption>What are Past Experiences? Past experiences are the good and bad events that have occurred in your life up to this moment. These can be one-time events as well as routine activities embedded in your life. Having past experiences is a part of life. One must know however, that to live a happy and fulfilling life, you must grasp how they affect what you do and think both now and in the future.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Your Guide to a Better Future - Reflecting On Your Past To favorably influence the future, think back on your previous experiences. Consider your achievements and setbacks, difficulties you overcame, and lessons you learned. This will assist you in identifying patterns in your behavior and decision-making that will help you make better decisions in the future. For example, imagine that you are in danger of failing an important course due to the fact that you are struggling with missed deadlines and incomplete tasks.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Taking a moment to think back to other times you were unable to complete things on time may lead you to understand that you struggle with the overall management of time. Digging further into your past and the values of your upbringing may explain why you struggled with prioritization of important tasks. The next step in your reflection would be to discover what methods you can develop to improve in the future.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Healing and Moving Forward - Long-Term Psychological Effects</image:title>
      <image:caption>Infidelity can have lasting psychological effects on the person who has been betrayed. Michael J. Moore's article on Psych Central highlights research indicating that individuals who have experienced infidelity may suffer from decreased self-esteem, increased anxiety, and trust issues in future relationships. Moore also suggests a feeling similar to PTSD as it can be a shock to your life, changes your brain chemistry, and leaves you with negative, insecure feelings that may linger. Understanding these potential effects can help you validate your emotions and recognize that healing takes time.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The immediate aftermath of discovering infidelity can be overwhelming. It is essential to acknowledge and process your emotions. The most important thing to remember at this time is to give yourself space to feel how you need to feel in a safe way. Be wary of impulsive decisions that will affect you or your loved ones in the future. It is at this time that many engage in self-destructive behaviors. Typically this is done unknowingly to avoid the pain you are left with.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Dealing with an Unexpected Death - Closure is a highly individual and subjective experience. It can occur at different times and in different ways for each person. Some individuals may find closure relatively quickly, while others may require more time and effort to reach a sense of resolution. It is important to remember that closure is a personal journey. This means that there is no right or wrong way to achieve it. It is about finding what brings peace and healing to the individual who has experienced the loss.</image:title>

First, it provides an outlet for the intense emotions that arise from grief, allowing you to express and release them in a healthy way. Second, sharing memories keeps the spirit and essence of your loved one alive, preserving their legacy and honoring their impact on your life. It also creates an opportunity for others to understand and empathize with your experience, fostering connection and support during a difficult time.</image:title>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Dealing with an Unexpected Death - Consider engaging in activities that were meaningful to them, such as participating in their favorite hobbies or volunteering for a cause that was close to their heart. Above all else, don't be afraid to be creative and think outside the box - write a letter to them, create artwork, or even plant a tree in their honor. The key is to create meaningful gestures that help keep their memory alive while providing comfort and healing for yourself and others who loved them.</image:title>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Dealing with an Unexpected Death - One effective approach is grief counseling or therapy, which provides a safe and supportive space to express and process your emotions with a trained professional. <image:caption>As indicated, using specific language can be helpful. This can be the difference between reading 1 chapter in a textbook and reading 5 chapters. Being specific in how you list things can mean the difference between completing what you set out to do and checking it off the list, or not checking it off and never returning to the list due to the belief that the checklist doesn’t work. Also, be sure to begin your items with a verb. If I write PSY reflection, it could be I am writing a reflection, reading one, responding to one, or critiquing one. Each of those takes a varying amount of time.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Our next step is to break down your task or goal into small steps. <image:title>Life's Compass - Mastering the Art of To-Do Lists - Set Realistic Goals</image:title>
      <image:caption>Obviously, no one wants to complete all of the above tasks in a single sitting. Some would even say they CAN’T finish it all at once. Setting realistic goals means you know how long something will take, and how much time and attention you have, and only then decide what can get done and when. For example, you may decide that since you have ECON and PSY on the same day, but the PSY reflection will be a lot quicker for you, you’ll do that and some reading first.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Part 1: 10 Keys to Success - Key 4: Smart Risk-Taking</image:title>
      <image:caption>At first, the idea of adopting a new approach could seem dangerous. It may even be terrifying. It’s okay to be afraid of failing. You have to keep in mind the possibility that you could achieve success with just this one strategy or change. While taking risks might be daunting, they can also have positive results. Making deliberate decisions from evaluated risks can result in enormous benefits and accomplishments. One of the key benefits of taking calculated risks is that it enables you to venture outside of your comfort zone. Many of us fear change and the unknown, which may prevent us from taking risks. Yet taking calculated risks will help you become resilient and adaptable, which are necessary skills for success.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>She asserts that with a growth attitude, obstacles are thrilling rather than dangerous. So rather than thinking, “oh, I'm going to show my shortcomings,” you say, “wow, here's a chance to grow!”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - 5 Mindful Ways to Avoid Overeating During the Holidays - Planning ahead also includes choosing your favorite holiday foods mindfully, rather than indulging in everything available. Do you really need 3 kinds of meat, 5 different pies, 3 types of potato, and 3 dinner rolls? If you are not hosting but want to ensure there is a healthier alternative, offer to bring a side. In doing this, you could ensure there is a healthy vegetable available. You could also make a traditional side with health-conscious ingredients. Greek yogurt for sour cream, reduced fat or sodium cream soup, or Neufchatel cheese instead of cream cheese.</image:title>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - 5 Mindful Ways to Avoid Overeating During the Holidays - To practice mindful eating during holiday gatherings, chew slowly. This not only gives you time to savor your bite, but it signals to your brain that you are indeed giving it nutrients. Put down your utensils between bites. If you are anything like me, if there is a glass in your hand, you are drinking. Similarly, if there is a fork or spoon in your hand, you are eating. Eating shouldn’t be the point of the gathering. Be sure to focus your attention on the people instead.</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you are just a fast eater, taking notice of when other people take bites may help to pace you. Above all else, be aware of satiety signals. Use the hunger scale to help you be in tune with your body.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - 5 Mindful Ways to Avoid Overeating During the Holidays - Self-compassion and the absence of negative self-talk related to eating habits are essential. Be kind to yourself. People come and go but you are stuck with yourself for the rest of your life. You shouldn’t be your greatest critic or enemy, but your biggest cheerleader and motivator. Avoid negative self-talk. I’ve always clung to the idea that if your mom wouldn’t say it to you, don’t say it to yourself. However, my mom was my biggest fan. This is not always the case. If that is the case for you, think if your biggest fan wouldn’t say it about you, don’t say it or think it about yourself. There is enough in the world to tear us down. Don’t contribute to the negative. The holiday season is a time for celebration and enjoyment, and it's possible to do so without overeating. By incorporating mindful eating practices, being conscious of portions, staying hydrated, planning ahead, and showing self-compassion, you can navigate the holiday festivities without the discomfort of overindulgence. Remember, it's about finding a balance between enjoyment and mindful choices.</image:title>
      <image:caption>By implementing these mindful strategies, you can savor the holiday season while maintaining a healthy relationship with food. Here's to a happy, healthy, and enjoyable holiday season!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - 5 Mindful Ways to Avoid Overeating During the Holidays - If you are able to contain yourself to small amounts, remember, once you have mindfully eaten a taste, you can always go back for more. If there is none left, hopefully, you savored what you could have. This is especially helpful if there are overwhelming options of dishes to choose from. If a large plate is put in front of you, filled to the gills, eat half. This is especially helpful at restaurants even when it isn’t the holiday season.</image:title>
      <image:caption>You can also create a balanced plate. No, I don’t mean putting the plate on your head and walking across the room. Try filling half the plate with vegetables, a quarter with protein, and the remaining quarter with carbs or other foods. Vegetables are high in nutrients and low in calories. Fill at least half of your plate with these sides. However, if they are cheesy, creamy, or fried, that very much defeats the purpose of consuming them. As much as they are the only way some people enjoy them, eating them has considerably fewer benefits. You may want to consider less than half of your plate.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - The Effect of Gratitude: Unveiling the Benefits - Resilience, or the ability to bounce back from adversity, is a key component of psychological well-being. Gratitude acts as a powerful tool for building resilience by encouraging individuals to find silver linings in challenging situations. When faced with difficulties, expressing gratitude allows us to shift our perspective from what went wrong to what can be learned or gained from the experience. This reframing of adversity empowers individuals to navigate challenges with a more optimistic and growth-oriented mindset.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Grateful individuals tend to view challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. Rather than viewing setbacks as insurmountable obstacles, they see them as stepping stones toward personal development. This mindset fosters resilience by acknowledging that setbacks are not the end but rather part of a broader journey. Gratitude encourages the recognition that even in the face of adversity, there are lessons to be learned and strengths to be discovered. Emotional resilience is closely tied to gratitude. Regularly practicing gratitude has been shown to guard against the negative impact of stressors.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - The Effect of Gratitude: Unveiling the Benefits - Scientific research has established a connection between gratitude and enhanced immune system function. Gratitude's positive influence on mental health plays a crucial role in this. As stress levels decrease through the practice of gratitude, the body's immune response is strengthened. Reduced stress hormones contribute to a stronger immune system, better equipped to defend against illnesses and infections. Therefore, the simple act of acknowledging and appreciating the positive elements in life serves to defend our physical well-being.</image:title>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - The Effect of Gratitude: Unveiling the Benefits - Expressing gratitude directly to those who have positively impacted your life is a powerful way to reinforce a thankful mindset. Whether through a heartfelt note, a phone call, or a face-to-face conversation, conveying your appreciation not only strengthens your connections but also enhances the joy and positivity in both your life and the lives of others. This exchange creates a positive feedback loop, enriching your relationships.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Integrating gratitude into your daily routines ensures that it becomes a consistent and natural part of your life. This can include setting aside time each morning or evening for a brief gratitude reflection.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - The Effect of Gratitude: Unveiling the Benefits - Gratitude serves as a powerful antidote to the stresses of modern life. When we consciously focus on the positive aspects of our experiences, it redirects our attention away from anxieties and uncertainties. Numerous studies have demonstrated that individuals who regularly practice gratitude exhibit lower levels of cortisol, the hormone associated with stress. The act of recognizing and appreciating the good in our lives creates a buffer against the harmful effects of chronic stress, fostering a more resilient and composed mental state.</image:title>

      <image:caption>Seasonal Depression, or SAD, is a condition that affects many individuals, typically during the fall and winter months. SAD leaves individuals feeling some of the same symptoms as general depression but typically has certain triggers as opposed to a constant state of depression. Be sure to talk to a therapist if you suspect having either SAD or general depression.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Part 2: Coping Strategies and Treatment Options - According to the Mayo Clinic (2016), SAD lights or light boxes should be used within the first hour of waking up in the morning for approximately 20-30 minutes. It is recommended to sit with the light 16 to 24 inches from your face but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to sit with your eyes open doing something such as reading, writing, or meditating. It is important to not look directly at the light as it truly is very bright.</image:title>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Part 3: Seasonal Self-Care and Prevention - Second, stay active. You may live in an area where it is just too cold to go for a refreshing walk. That is completely understandable. Find replacement behaviors. If you used to walk or run outside, maybe switch to home workouts, pacing the floor, or doing yoga.</image:title>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Part 3: Seasonal Self-Care and Prevention - For Example:</image:title>
      <image:caption>Nutrition: Drink water before meals and instead of soda, alcohol, or caffeinated beverages. Emotional: Move every day for 20 minutes because I know I am in a better mood when I do. Environmental: Avoid the bar. Social: Make a goal to get together with friends or family 1-2 times a week. Financial: Plan your spending for the month and stick to it. (No impulse buying because I feel sad.) Spiritual: Write daily in a gratitude journal. Occupational: be conscious of the work/life balance. Intellectual: Read 1 book a month.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Life's Compass - Part 3: Seasonal Self-Care and Prevention - According to the Mayo Clinic (2020), self-care practices should cover three areas: mindfulness, creativity, and relaxation. Mindfulness comes from the idea of being mentally present in the moment that you are in. One way this can happen is through a body scan. Sitting with your eyes closed, focus on your breathing. Once your mind has calmed down and stopped thinking about what you need to do next or how you don’t want to get out of bed, pay attention to your body. Notice the different sensations in the various parts as you mentally move from head to toe.</image:title>
      <image:caption>If this doesn’t appeal to you, you can also journal. This can be done by writing down anything. You can focus on gratitude (and that is suggested) but it helps sometimes to just get your thoughts out on paper. I’ve found that rereading thoughts I have in low periods in my life strike me differently when I am out of the low time. This helps the next time these thoughts come around as I am more mindful of them and “the other side” of them if you will.</image:caption>
